Weldbank to Sheffield 6.0 miles Class Grad Size (Area/Volume) Scene/Poll Level C-I 7/9 Small
(128/248) B/B Topographic Maps: Clarendon, Sheffield County Maps: Warren Description: This stream emerges from a highlands plateau to become an excellent open canoe creek beginning at Sheffield. Above Sheffield the transition from swamp to definitive channel is slow. See description of Tionesta Creek for the section below Sheffield. The stream has been run as far upstream as Forest Service Road 154 near Clarendon, but the first 2.5 miles is swamp. The swamp outlet near Weldbank is the limit of reasonable navigation with paddlers still paying a heavy price of downed trees as the stream gathers size. The stream is very small and well hidden, giving a remote appearance from the water. [Reported 1999] Difficulties: Trees. Above Weldbank, trees, and more trees. Shuttle: The put-in is about 3 miles north of Sheffield along US Route 6. Put in at Weldbank where the river turns away from the road. Head back/south on US Route 6 to Sheffield and take State Route 666 south out of Sheffield. Chose your distance. Gauges: Lynch. This gauge further downstream on the main stem will probably read above 3.0 feet. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should normally be runnable approximately January through April. |
